18 Life Lessons Learned From Traveling The World

Thought Catalog

I never thought I would still be nomadic. My original round-the-world trip was only supposed to last one year before I went back home, found a “real” job, settled down, and by now, be married, have a house, 2.5 children, and complain about my retirement fund to my friends.

Yet life took a decidedly different turn and here I am, seven years later, writing this from an overnight train to Copenhagen with the same desire to explore the world and no sign of stopping soon.

After so many years on the road, there are a few life lessons I’ve learned from travel that I never would have learned otherwise and I wanted to share with you today.

1. It’s not that hard.

Every day, people get up, go out the door to travel the world, and survive and thrive. Kids as young as 18 make their way around the world…

10 Things I Have Found To Be True Over And Over Again

10. Life is too short for Top 40s pop music, boring books, weak coffee, and fickle friends.

Learn what things are important to you, and prioritize accordingly.

9. You’ll be a much happier person if you learn to appreciate what you have.

It seems cliché, but yearning for something you may never get will lead you to miss the great things all around you. Value your experiences without dwelling on the past, and be grateful for the good things (even when bad stuff pops up along the way).

8. Exercise should not be about numbers.

If you work out because it is good for your mind and your body, you will enjoy yourself a lot more than if you obsess over those last five pounds, or painstakingly calculate every calorie you burn.

7. Your beauty and self-worth are not contingent upon anything else.

Remind yourself that you are desirable and deserving…

1. Enough good friends around you that you a) have other people to spend your time with when you want to see people you care about and b) have a support system, should this relationship ever go south.

2. The comfort with your appearance to be naked, makeup-free, and completely casual without feeling like you want to peel your skin off every time your significant other sees you in your natural state.

3. Experience with people you definitely did not want to end up with, so that you know what it looks like much more clearly when someone is treating you well and making you feel good about yourself. (And you can turn away the losers before you waste any real time with them.)

The best is yet to come

At times life will hit you with problems, so hard you can’t even understand why it’s happening. Things that will challenge you, your mind and your strength.

But I think that whatever it is, we should always just look at the brighter side of things.

If you are mending a broken heart, being sad for quite some time seems understandable, but, you should know when to stop and get your shit back together.

Whine for a while. Cry for a while. But after all this, learn to be happy. Move on with your life. Because it may be true that love makes the world go round, but dear! There’s more to life than love.

When academics is again a living hell, be patient! It may be hard for the moment but it won’t stay that way forever. Push yourself into working! It will come to an end, and eventually, you’ll have your little piece of heaven.

Struggle with family life will always be there, but hey you aren’t the only person thinking about it, you are not the only one affected. Remember, you have your family with you. You don’t have to go through it alone.

So whatever it is, just stay positive! A better outlook in life will not only help you but the people that sees you as well.

“Be the better person.”

Decided to take a break from the stress of school works, my friend and I headed to Ocean Park for it was the nearest place we could take pics of the sunset, since we are already running out of time.
